But Trail USA in Intensity of MDS Adoption

m.Net Releases Australian Results of Worldwide Mobile Data Service Study

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 30 March 2009 - m.Net Corporation, Australia’s leading mobile marketing company, today released the Australian results of the 2008 Worldwide Mobile Data Service (MDS) Study, revealing growth in the number of Australians using their mobile phone for a wider range of products and services.

The study, conducted in November 2008, found that 97 per cent of Australians surveyed used their mobile phone for more than just voice. Of these respondents, 61% had used information type services in the last full month, 57% had used entertainment type services, 99% had used communication type services and 31% had used their mobile phone to make a purchase like movie tickets. The survey results also saw an increase in the take-up of mobile-based email, video, chat, financial information and social networking.

m.Net Corporation defines MDS as “all the digital data services that you access through your mobile phone excluding voice calls”. This includes purchasing, communications, information and entertainment.

m.Net Research Director, Dr Marisa Maio Mackay, said Australians are “growing up” as a mobile society..

“What we’re seeing is a greater reliance on mobile phones as the platform for a broad range of data services. Over half the survey group owned a 3G or 3.5G phone and over 70 per cent said they used a service other than simple communications like texting or MMS,” she said.

“There’s also been a drop off in the use of “comfort services” like ringtones and wallpapers, with Australians instead being much more willing to pay for access to mobile data, reflecting the increased value they place on these services,” Dr Maio Mackay explained.

Other key findings from the study include:

Those that visited a website increased from 41 per cent in 2007 to 49 per cent in 2008;

Mobile Internet searches increased from 23 per cent in 2007 to 30 per cent in 2008;

Take-up of mobile email grew from 26 per cent in 2007 to 34 per cent in 2008;

Fifty per cent of those that used MDS in 2008 used mobile chat, a 120 per cent hike from the previous year;

Mobile access to financial data jumped 60 per cent from 10 per cent (2007) to 16 per cent (2008);

Mobile access to social networking grew 50 per cent from 10 per cent to 15 per cent;

Thirty-three per cent used MDS for over 30 minutes per week, up by 120 per cent from 15 per cent in 2007;

Sixty-four per cent of Australian respondents were willing to pay more than $10 per month for unlmited mobile data access, up from zero per cent the previous year;

Australians are becoming more savvy in how they access mobile data, with the proportion of users who typed in a URL dropping from 54 per cent in 2007 to 29 per cent in 2008;

Australians are beginning to truly recognise and acknowledge how the use of the mobile phone can tie into their everyday lives: 41% of respondents were interested in mobile banking, 44% ere interested in the ability to pay for things with their mobile phone and 31% of respondents were interested in using community sites.

Australia Lags US in Intensity of MDS Use
The study showed that Australians lagged behind American mobile phone users in the intensity of their usage, with US respondents to the global study using a wider range of data services for much longer periods of time than Australians.

“Americans are far more intense and active users than Australians and have really embraced mobile data services in the past few years, partly thanks to ‘all you can use’ fixed pricing plans and the resolution of early network issues,” said Dr Maio Mackay.

“While Australians have transitioned from a small group of high level users to a medium group of medium level users over many years, the American market has gone from a small group of high level users to a large group of high level users in just a few years,” she said.

The Worldwide Mobile Data Services Survey
The Worldwide Mobile Data Services Survey is an annual study involving a consortium of universities, industry partners and research institutions located around the world. The Australian leg of the study, conducted in November 2008, canvassed around 2,000 respondents from a broad cross-section of employment, education, living status and income. The results can be generalised to the 18-50 age group. Of the sample group, 53 per cent owned a 3G or 3.5G phone and the most popular modes of bill payment were capped monthly plan (42 per cent), pre-paid (32 per cent) and uncapped monthly plan (14 per cent).

Many of the discussions I have had at trade shows and with new prospects are marketers looking to find out more about mobile marketing and advertising. The discussion quickly moves to “how do I get started”.

For a marketer starting to explore mobile, it can be a daunting task due to the number of acronyms thrown about by our industry on a daily basis. There are a few basic tools that I recommend any client should have to start to trial and embrace mobile as part of their mix now. Starting with this tool kit today will set your organisation on a path to make mobile an even more cost effective channel in the near future.

The basic tool kit:

Short code or long code depending on your market

Mobile destination,

Web trigger

Shortcode and longcodes. Text messaging in most markets is the easiest place to start an organisations entry into mobile marketing. Traditionally this represents the highest penetration method to reach a mobile audience as even the most basic mobile handset has this capability. In most countries you will need to obtain a number through your major mobile carrier or mobile solutions partner (SMS Aggregator). Once your code is set up you have the equivalent of an address to use for ongoing marketing calls to action and to interact with you customers. These services are very effective on Outdoor media, print, and TV. Typical uses are prompting your audience to “text [KEYWORD] to [shortcode/longcode] to get more information/enter a competition/register interest”. This can be a powerful way to start a dialogue with a potential customer. As marketers drive towards gaining greater understanding of the returns from their media investment this technique gives you almost instantaneous feedback on how your media is performing e.g. how many prospects text in after a TV ad spot, after a magazine hits the stands etc.

The mobile destination. Most companies start out with a very simple mobile site or a campaign based landing page. As 3G network penetration increases and consumers move toward later handsets, this presents a compelling opportunity to provide a richer, more informative experience. Leading brands are now starting to build their mobile “web site” as they seek to be found anywhere, anytime by their prospects and customers and to feature in the fast growing mobile search engines. Mobile destinations these days are moving beyond text and graphics and are fully featured sites that includ data entry/capture, video, and transactional credit card billing. Take a look at the m.Net mobile destination (mobile.mnetcorporation.com) to see a wide range of recent client destinations ranging from compelling coupons and campaign sites right thru to full featured mobile destinations.

Web Triggers allow you to take advantage of the investment you have put into your online website to promote your mobile assets. One of the challenges of creating a mobile destination is how to make your audience aware of its existence. A web trigger is a call to action, typically implemented as icon on your website that your users interact with to launch a pop up. The pop up allows the user to enter their mobile number and to send an SMS with a link to the desired mobile asset to their handset. Really effective but simple executions include mobile contact pages (your business details, a map and a click2call phone number), and mobile coupons (shown at point of sale to redeem the offer). Advanced forms of web triggers allow the user to opt-in (double opt-in of course) off the pop up on your web site so that you can grow your mobile opt-in database.

Finally getting started is actually very cost effective particularly with the backdrop of the global financial crisis. You are on your way with this little toolkit including a basic mobile site (1-3 page) for less then $10K. There really is no reason why your business should not be starting the “plan, trial, refine” cycle with mobile marketing and advertising to understand the best ROI for your business objectives.

Finalists will give presentations about their companies on January 13th during the Innovation Fast Pitch, taking place at the Business Technology Center, run by the Community Development Commission of the County of Los Angeles. They will then travel to the Bay Area to participate in the Innovation Shootout on January 15th at the Quadras Conference Center in Menlo Park. The winner will be selected by a panel of judges including technology experts, members of the media, and venture capitalists.

m.Net has been recognised for its innovation, quality work and impact on the new media industry by being named B&T’s Digital Services Company of the Year for 2008. The Award was presented during a gala event at Sydney’s Luna Park in early December.

A panel of leading industry judges chose m.Net as the winner after reviewing our work on the Telstra 2008 Olympics mobile site, which provided real-time coverage, on-demand video, news reports, SMS alerts and access to online games. We have since developed the mobile sites for the Telstra BigPond live coverage of the Australian cricket tour of India and we now manage and support the BigPond Horse Racing site which was relaunched to accommodate the high live streaming demand over the Spring Racing Carnival.

The award citation stated that, “M.Net has shown Australia to be home to the best mid-range mobile video platform in the world.”

In the area of innovation, m.Net’s capabilities are constantly being stretched as advertisers challenge us to come up to new techniques to engage their target customers. This has led to revolutionary developments like Campaign Mobile, a global online self service platform that allows agencies, web developers and brands to easily create and manage mobile advertising and marketing campaigns at a fraction of traditional costs. This platform won the 2008 South Australian iAward for the Best Communication Application.

Other award-winning projects include the Great Outdoors Promotion for Toyota Camry, which won the ADMA MMA Award for the Promotional Campaign of the Year 2008.

It has been an incredible six months of awards and recognition for m.Net. In recent months m.Net was recognised as one of Australia’s fastest growing companies placing 5th in the 2008 BRW Fast 100 and ranking for the second year in a row in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50.

The prestigious B&T Award also recognised m.Net’s support for the industry through our research programs with AIMIA for the Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index and our role in leading the Australian section of the annual international Wireless Data Services Study, among other projects. We also support various university study programs and provide speakers to actively share our knowledge at leading new media and marketing events.

m.Net’s dominance of the mobile marketing sector has been perfectly timed, with recent research showing that mobile data services are enjoying rapid acceptance across the wider Australian population.
